First Destination : India House
India House is a double-storey building in George Town. It is located on the corner of Beach Street and Church Street Ghaut, and carries an address on both streets. It was built in 1937 in the Indian Art Deco style, by S.N.A.S Sockalingam Chettiar. Today it appears a bit worn down, but when it was first built, it was the highest assessment payer along expensive Church Street Ghaut, or Gat Lebuh Gereja, is the extension of Church Street following land reclamation in the fourth quarter of the 19th century. Beach Street. The land reclamation came about for two reasons:Firstly, the decades from the 1860's was a boom period for George Town, due to increased demand for tin from the Larut district. This resulted in increasing the activity of the port in Penang. With that came the importation of raw material as well as piece goods (finished products) from all over the world. The need for warehousing became more pressing. However by then much of George Town has already been developed for commercial use. Hence land reclamation was the answer for warehousing. The newly created land on Church Street Ghaut was to house warehouses, called godown (after the Malay word, gudang). Secondly, the shoreline was extended out from Beach Street because it was a mix of sandy shore and mudflats which were not ideal for shipping. The introduction of steamships made it necessary for Penang to have a new deep-water anchorage that is close to shore. In that way, the steamships can berth directly at the quay. Until then, ships berth along piers that were built out into the sea from Beach Street. Today Church Street Ghaut is holds the remnants of warehouses from the time when Penang harbour was much busier. It awaits rejuvenation, now that Church Street Ghaut is within the core zone of the George Town Unesco World Heritage Site.

We divide our work and start research...
|
Historical name of Church Street Ghaut come from the name of a liquor distillery which belong to the Spirit Farm used to stand at the junction of Church Street and Beach Street |
The Building...
The symbol of india house is the elephant statue |
The interior design and interior structure of India house is still a mystery for us because india house is always locked throughout the year .So what we do is study its exterior appearance and its sturcture. The building is built by giantic bricks. There is total of 27 layers of bricks .From our measurement each brick has a height of 44.5cm. Thus we expected the building height is approximately 1.2km ( 44.5 x 27 ≈ 12oo ) .
After we done our research on india house ,we move again ....
Second destination : Peranakan Mansion Penang
The Peranakans, also known as the
Babas and Nyonyas, was a prominent community of acculturated Chinese unique to
this part of the world, especially in the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca
and Singapore) hence its other name, the Straits Chinese. Adopting selected ways
of the local Malays and later, the colonial British, the Peranakans had created
a unique lifestyle and customs which had not only left behind a rich legacy of
antiques but its cultural influences like cuisine and language are still evident
in Penang today. The mansion belongs to Chung Keng Quee (Kapitan) from China who made his fortunes over here. Although he was an immigrant from China, he was greatly influence by the Straits Chinese (called the “Peranakan”) culture. He commissioned his stately mansion to be built incorporating the strong Peranakan architectural design. It was lavishly furbished with elegant ceramic floor tiles from England, beautiful iron casted art work from Scotland for the balconies and railings and elegant carved-wood panels and screen for the doors and walls from China. At the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, the
typical home of a rich Baba of a century ago is recreated to offer a glimpse of
their opulent lifestyle and of their many customs and traditions. With over
1,000 pieces of antiques and collectibles of the era on display, this
Baba-Nyonya museum is also housed in one of Penang’s heritage mansion of
eclectic design and architecture. Built at the end of the 19th century by one of
local history’s famous personalities, the ‘Hai Kee Chan’ or Sea Remembrance
Store had once served as the residence and office of Kapitan Cina Chung Keng
Kwee. Though not a Baba himself, his Chinese courtyard house was much like a
typical large Baba home of eclectic style, incorporating Chinese carved-wood
panels and English floor tiles and Scottish ironworks. Having survived the many
decades of neglect and decay, the mansion has now been restored to its former
glory of a stately home Visiting Hours is Monday to Sunday including Public
Holidays from 9:30 am to 5 pm.Every entry iis rm1o.oo and it is free of charge for every children (below 6 yrs old ) .

I felt shocked when i saw the presentation board from other group.I think it doesnt matter at least we've tried our best. I knew not our group didnt show our best just because other group do even better than ours.In conclusion ,we shouldn't feel disappointed when recieving cruel comments from lecturers and what we should do is learn from our mistake . None of us is perfect we should learn together and growth together and hope group 9 can mantain our spirit of team work for the next assignments. I believe we will improve because everyone from group 9 having the same attitude - optimistic and positive thinking ... long live Group 9 !
