First Destination : India House
India House is a double-storey building in George Town. It is located on the corner of Beach Street and Church Street Ghaut, and carries an address on both streets. It was built in 1937 in the Indian Art Deco style, by S.N.A.S Sockalingam Chettiar. Today it appears a bit worn down, but when it was first built, it was the highest assessment payer along expensive Church Street Ghaut, or Gat Lebuh Gereja, is the extension of Church Street
following land reclamation in the fourth quarter of the 19th century. Beach Street. The land reclamation came about for two reasons:Firstly, the decades
from the 1860's was a boom period for George Town, due to increased demand for
tin from the Larut district. This resulted in increasing the activity of the
port in Penang. With that came the importation of raw material as well as piece
goods (finished products) from all over the world. The need for warehousing
became more pressing. However by then much of George Town has already been
developed for commercial use. Hence land reclamation was the answer for
warehousing. The newly created land on Church Street Ghaut was to house
warehouses, called godown (after the Malay word, gudang). Secondly, the
shoreline was extended out from Beach Street
because it was a mix of sandy shore and mudflats which were not ideal for
shipping. The introduction of steamships made it necessary for Penang to have a
new deep-water anchorage that is close to shore. In that way, the steamships can
berth directly at the quay. Until then, ships berth along piers that were built
out into the sea from Beach Street. Today Church Street Ghaut is holds the
remnants of warehouses from the time when Penang harbour was much busier. It
awaits rejuvenation, now that Church Street Ghaut is within the core zone of the
George Town Unesco World Heritage Site.
|
Historical name of Church Street Ghaut come from the name of a liquor distillery which belong to the Spirit Farm used to stand at the junction of Church Street and Beach Street |
The Building...
The symbol of india house is the elephant statue
|
The interior design and interior structure of India house is still a mystery for us because india house is always locked throughout the year .So what we do is study its exterior appearance and its sturcture. The building is built by giantic bricks. There is total of 27 layers of bricks .From our measurement each brick has a height of 44.5cm. Thus we expected the building height is approximately 1.2km ( 44.5 x 27 ≈ 12oo ) .
After we done our research on india house ,we move again ....
Second destination : Peranakan Mansion Penang
The Peranakans, also known as the
Babas and Nyonyas, was a prominent community of acculturated Chinese unique to
this part of the world, especially in the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca
and Singapore) hence its other name, the Straits Chinese. Adopting selected ways
of the local Malays and later, the colonial British, the Peranakans had created
a unique lifestyle and customs which had not only left behind a rich legacy of
antiques but its cultural influences like cuisine and language are still evident
in Penang today. The mansion belongs to Chung Keng Quee (Kapitan) from China who made his fortunes over here. Although he was an immigrant from China, he was greatly influence by the Straits Chinese (called the “Peranakan”) culture. He commissioned his stately mansion to be built incorporating the strong Peranakan architectural design. It was lavishly furbished with elegant ceramic floor tiles from England, beautiful iron casted art work from Scotland for the balconies and railings and elegant carved-wood panels and screen for the doors and walls from China. At the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, the
typical home of a rich Baba of a century ago is recreated to offer a glimpse of
their opulent lifestyle and of their many customs and traditions. With over
1,000 pieces of antiques and collectibles of the era on display, this
Baba-Nyonya museum is also housed in one of Penang’s heritage mansion of
eclectic design and architecture. Built at the end of the 19th century by one of
local history’s famous personalities, the ‘Hai Kee Chan’ or Sea Remembrance
Store had once served as the residence and office of Kapitan Cina Chung Keng
Kwee. Though not a Baba himself, his Chinese courtyard house was much like a
typical large Baba home of eclectic style, incorporating Chinese carved-wood
panels and English floor tiles and Scottish ironworks. Having survived the many
decades of neglect and decay, the mansion has now been restored to its former
glory of a stately home Visiting Hours is Monday to Sunday including Public
Holidays from 9:30 am to 5 pm.Every entry iis rm1o.oo and it is free of charge for every children (below 6 yrs old ) .

Third Destination : Penang Islamic House
Penang Islamic Museum, also known as the Syed Alatas Mansion, is a heritage
building at 128 Lebuh Armenian, 10200 Penang. The museum was created to
celebrate the role and contribution of Malay leaders in the development and
propagation of Islam in Penang. It also documents for posterity the history of
the Malay settlement in Acheen Street and
provides details on Malay personalities of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Syed Alatas Mansion was built by Syed Mohammad Alatas, an Achenese by
descent, who built his mansion along Armenian Street. The mansion, in mid-19th
century Straits Eclectic style, was built in 1860, and stands today as one of
the few bungalows with Islamic elements from that era. It is one of the few
bungalows erected by the Malay elite of the 19th century, similar to the Teh Bunga
Mansion. A defender of the liberty of Acheh against the Dutch, Syed Alatas
provided support to the Achenese resistance in the form of fire arms. His
mansion was the venue for clandestine base for Achenese rebels.Syed
Alatas was the leader of the Red Flag secret society, which is centred at Malay
Town, as the Muslim settlement around Acheen Street and
Armenian Street were called at that time. The Red Flag, aligned with Khian Teik
Tong (read Hock Teik
Cheng Sin Temple and Leong San
Tong Khoo Kongsi) The Red Flag society fought with the White Flag secret
society in the Penang Riots of 1867. Syed Alatas had two wives. The first wife
was from a Malay royal family while his second wife was the daughter of wealthy
Straits Chinese pepper trader, Khoo Tiang Poh, who was a member of the Khoo
Kongsi and the Khian Teik Tong. The marriage to Khoo Tiang Poh's daughter
strengthened the alliance between the Red Flag and the Khian Teik Tong.
Objectives of the Museum :
1.To enshrine for posterity, the role and contributions of Malay leaders in the development and propagation of Islam in Pulau Pinang.
2.To retrace the impressive history of Acheen Street and to preserve Malay historical heritage in the midst of the rapid physical development taking place in Pulau Pinang.
3.To draw the interest of historians and other visitors to the historical heritage of the area.
4.To disseminate knowledge to interested historians and others and subsequently to enhance efforts towards documenting historical facts of the vicinity.
5.To provide a resource centre for students, researchers and the general public on the history of Islam in Pulau Pinang.
6.To establish a new tourism product with the concept of an Islamic Heritage Trail.

Stage III : Presentation
I felt shocked when i saw the presentation board from other group.I think it doesnt matter at least we've tried our best. I knew not our group didnt show our best just because other group do even better than ours.In conclusion ,we shouldn't feel disappointed when recieving cruel comments from lecturers and what we should do is learn from our mistake . None of us is perfect we should learn together and growth together and hope group 9 can mantain our spirit of team work for the next assignments. I believe we will improve because everyone from group 9 having the same attitude - optimistic and positive thinking ... long live Group 9 !
The lecturer commented four of our presentation board didnt linked together perfectly ..we should learn from our mistakes, by the way ,we should not feel discourage but glad because everyone of us involve in producing the boards, some of us dont know water colour but at least you try to paint the diagrams with colour pencil, u guy are well done and awesome ! it is a good start and dont worry we will improve together because we dare to try something that we dont know and we didnt purposely hide up our weakness .. everyone of us are take part in drawing and colouring ,members of group 9 shouldnt feel disappointed ,although our board doesnt linked nicely but our heart is already linked together when we doing assignment together ..
